    Domain-Specific Conceptual Modeling for Distributed Ledger Technologies

    Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) have recently gained attention due to their potential of radically changing existing business models by eliminating the need for intermediaries and central IT platforms who control the validity, storage, and execution of transactions between business participants. Furthermore, DLT contribute to the transparency of transactions and allow for novel forms of transaction automation via so-called smart contracts. Conceptual modeling languages such as UML, ER, BPMN or DMN have been used for facilitating the design, for generating code for DLT applications and for executing models in the distributed environment of DLT. Methods from data analytics and visualization have contributed approaches for analyzing data from DLT applications. Most recently, approaches for storing models and ontologies on distributed ledgers have been proposed for tracing changes in models and for proving the existence of information in models without disclosing their content. In the proposed research project, we develop domain-specific conceptual modeling methods that can be used for designing and analyzing DLT applications as well as approaches for the distributed storage and execution of models. More specifically, we revert to existing enterprise modeling languages and investigate how they need to be extended, adapted or modified for using them in a distributed ledger technology context. Unlike previous conceptual modeling languages that do not consider DLT concepts explicitly, in our research agenda we put the focus on concepts that are specific for the DLT domain for adapting and creating conceptual modeling languages, thus contributing to a possible future standardization of DLT design and analysis. At a technical level, our main research objectives are to provide i. domain-specific conceptual modeling languages for the design and analysis of distributed ledger technology-based applications, ii. an approach for the DLT-based storage of domain-specific conceptual models, and iii. techniques for the DLT-based execution of domain-specific models. The feasibility and effectiveness of the developed methods will be validated using data from three experimental use cases from the domains of: Internet-of-Things for the decentralized tracking of smart devices, Asset Tokenization to issue tokens that represent tangible and intangible assets in digital form, and for assuring the authenticity of ontology submissions and modifications and their submitters in the Stanford BioPortal repository as a foundation for enhancing trust in biomedical data analyses.
