    Langues et histoire: un dialogue interdisciplinaire

    Cette journĂ©e d’étude explore les rapports entre langues et histoire dans une perspective interdisciplinaire, en rĂ©unissant des chercheures et chercheurs en sociolinguistique, anthropologie linguistique, sociolinguistique historique, didactique des langues et histoire. Elle se concentre particuliĂšrement sur « les moments historiques et socialement bien situĂ©s » auxquels il s’agit de relier la description et l’analyse des pratiques langagiĂšres, afin de proposer une interprĂ©tation et une explication des phĂ©nomĂšnes linguistiques qui tiennent compte des dynamiques sociales Ă  plus grande Ă©chelle, tant dans l’espace que dans le temps (Heller 2002, p. 9). À travers le dialogue interdisciplinaire, l’objectif est d’explorer comment ces moments historiques sont, ou devraient ĂȘtre, intĂ©grĂ©s dans la description et l’analyse sociolinguistiques. Autrement dit, cette journĂ©e d’étude cherche Ă  comprendre pourquoi et comment les Ă©lĂ©ments historiques sont pris en compte, posant ainsi la question fondamentale de l’utilisation de l’histoire dans l’étude des langues en sociĂ©tĂ© : quelle histoire est utilisĂ©e, comment (objet, perspective, mise en discours

    A critical historiographic analysis of discourses of language “rise” and “decline”: emergence, circulation and impact in (inter)national spaces

    The goal of this research project is to examine language ideological debates throughout the period 1970-1990 in two international organisations, the Council of Europe and the European Union, from a critical sociolinguistic perspective. Their discourses on multilingualism and their recommendations for language teaching have shaped language policy in education in many European contexts since. Therefore, this sociolinguistic project seeks to historicise current language ideological debates and language-in-education policies in Swiss cantons and Catalonia in Northern Spain where the two researchers are based. This collaborative project aims to generate new knowledge on the discourses of multilingualism that ideologically construct a “rise” or “decline” of languages at a key socio-political and historical juncture in Europe. We will analyse and compare the data collected in two international organisation archives, both physical and online, to paint a broader picture of language ideological debates in Europe and their impact on different regions. This comparative account of language discourses and policies will allow us to avoid the pitfalls of methodological nationalism, which takes the nation-state as the taken-for-granted unit of analysis and obscures the transnational circulation of discourses. The expected outcomes of this project are: a joint article, a special issue proposal, a blog entry and a participation in an international scientific panel.

    Le projet propose un espace de réflexions méthodologiques sur la recherche sociolinguistique ethnographique critique qui s’appuient sur des expériences de chercheur∙e∙s. Sur un site web dédié à ces réflexions, l’équipe met à disposition des chroniques personnelles sur des problèmes concrets qui viennent interroger le∙la chercheur∙e, qui souvent sont porteurs de sens et conduisent à mieux comprendre les phénomènes, les institutions et les acteurs qu’il∙elle étudie.
